On the trail of light – France 2022

The vehicle glides quietly along the almost empty Normandy highway towards Rouen, where our last sleeping place for this trip will be. The sun is already very low and I feel the evening atmosphere, which relaxes and calms me. I listen to the whirring and singing of the wind as it brushes past the roof box and my thoughts circle around the experiences of this trip. Behind my driver’s seat, the fevered dog has fallen asleep, and that’s a good thing. We’re going home to give him a better chance to heal up. It will take three weeks, the vet had said, after she had clipped his croup and tail…

    Travel lessons

It could have been so easy: two weeks of hibernation over Christmas and New Year’s, cozying up on the couch and reading a book while drinking hot cocoa…. “Why am I doing this to myself?”, I asked myself, as I do every time I lose myself in hours of travel preparations, knowing full well that following up on the trip ahead will take the same amount of time and effort afterwards. But I had set my mind on getting to know Prague. Before that, I wanted to spend some quiet days in the Saxon nature and make my dog happy with long walks. I had imagined a snow-covered landscape and…

    Solo camping with dog

Since I’ve been traveling with Mowgli – and that’s been quite a few years now – I’ve accumulated a number of experiences that I’d like to share with you. The unique situation on our trips is usually that I am solely responsible for my dog, which creates issues at some points that require a creative solution. On the journey When camping Ventures Health problems Conclusion On the journey There are dogs who are quite excited when they are allowed to ride in the car. Others can’t stand it. As for Mowgli, he is neither enthusiastic nor reluctant to jump on his doggy mattress in the car. He knows that we…

    Vegan in Iceland

One of the countries where Mowgli will probably never set his paw due to the strict entry requirements for animals is fabled Iceland. What a country! Epic like the music of Sigur Rós and bizarre like the works of Björk. Lunar landscapes, sparkling turquoise waters, expanse with snow-capped volcanoes in the distance, black bottoms, pale skies, green earth…

    Fancy some troubleshooting?

A holiday trip is not always comparable to a break in paradise. Sometimes a bit of troubleshooting is called for. It doesn’t necessarily have to be a flat tire. Sometimes a trip is more like an obstacle race. From bad weather, headaches, human friction to small breakdowns of all kinds, everything can be there. How big the frustration is at the end also depends on the expectations that are placed on a trip. It makes a difference whether you expect a dream holiday with “only the best for me” setting or whether you tend to have the basic attitude “let’s see what comes next”. The latter is a good prerequisite…

    Road trip Slovenia – Italy

3242 kilometers! In the summer of 2019 I am turning my back on the Ruhr area. What a feeling! After a year of hard work, leave all the commitments behind and hit the first song on the travel playlist. “Trailers for sale or rent, rooms to let, fifty cents…” comes the soft voice of Dean Martin from the loudspeaker. I belt out “King of the road!” as loud as I can. and whizzing down the A3 towards the south. I won’t be back home until a good three weeks later after a long tour of five European countries.
